Prempro™ Uses
Prempro™ is a popular form of Hormone Replacement Therapy that combines the hormones estrogen and progestin into one pill. Prempro™ is used to mitigate menopause symptoms. Menopause normally occurs between ages 40 and 58, at which time women produce significantly less estrogen than previously. This reduction of estrogen can lead to a variety of troublesome symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.
Women take Prempro™ after menopause to help reduce all of these symptoms and to minimize the chances of osteoporosis (weakening of the bones).
Prempro™ Side Effects
Some of most significant Prempro™ side effects are breast pain and enlargement, vaginitis, leg cramps, vaginal spotting and bleeding, and painful menstruation.
Why Prempro™ May Be Recalled
In addition to the side effects listed above, some studies have linked Prempro™ to an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, stroke, blood clots, pulmonary embolisms, lupus, invasive breast cancer, and ovarian cancer. Prempro™ use has been associated with the following:
Breast cancer (26% increase)
Heart attacks (29% increase)
Strokes (41% increase)
Blood clots in legs and lungs (twice the normal rate)
Prempro was linked to dementia in women over age 65.
In other words, instead of preserving health and preventing disease, Prempro™ may potentially harm otherwise perfectly healthy women. Ultimately, Prempro™ may be recalled if the FDA rules that the drug’s risks significantly outweigh its benefits.
